The work of

W. H. SCOTT

(WILLIAM HUNTER SCOTT)

(1863 - 1918)

PHOTOGRAPHER

LEADHILLS

During the early part of the 20th Century many postcards and photographs of Leadhills and the surrounding area were produced and sold. Many were made by a local photographer, 'W.H.Scott'.

Over the years many of these pictures have been lost or destroyed but regular searching through boxes of second hand postcards has turned up a steady stream - so I am now building up a collection. A few examples are shown below. If you have any tucked away I would love to have copies and I am happy to share the ones I have found with you. Some have already come to me via e-mail from around the world from people with an interest in Leadhills.

William Hunter Scott was born into a farming family in Leadhills in 1863. In the early 1900's he had a photo-studio in Main Street, Leadhills at the junction with Station Road in premises that later became a shop and have now been rebuilt as two cottages. He lived at Ashlea House at the bottom of The Vennel, Leadhills He specialised in postcards of views around the area and also did a series on local characters. The posting dates on most of the cards are 1903/4 with some as late as 1910. His studio was used for many family portraits and local groups He died on the 16th December 1918 and is buried in the Leadhills graveyard.
